LUNA : The Town of Wonders


 Are you a hiker? An adventurer? Do you adore nature? If you do, then one town to visit 
and explore is  Luna, La Union, Philippines. With it's famous tourist spots fit for a royalty, 
with the cuisines that can make you feel heaven, and products that was delicately made, 
you will surely have a great time in Luna.

 Revolutionary General Antonio Luna 




 General Antonio Luna was one of the generals that led the Filipino people in the revolution on the time of the Spaniards. He was a brave general but unfortunately he was assasinated by some Filipino soldiers.


  


 Spoliarium Painter Juan Luna 





 Juan Luna is the brother of General Antonio Luna. He was a famous painter. He painted many masterpieces that gave recognition and praise to the Philippines. One of this was the Spoliarium. Here is the picture of his magnificent painting:




 Donatildea Laureana Novicio Luna 




 Donatildea Laureana Novicio is the mother of the prominent General Antonio Luna and Painter Juan Luna, as well as a few other "Luna" patriots (brothers of Antonio and Juan) that hadn't reached "superhero" status. Instilling all those virtues and values in life had worked, and her children contributed a lot for the country. After the assassination of her son, General Antonio Luna, she prevented a plot by relatives and townsfolk to kill Emilio Aguinaldo when the President stopped by to rest in a nearby town while retreating from the Americans. It was a great display of strength and composure of a mother grieving for the death of her son, especially when the man thought to be responsible was close by.

Luna's Most Unique and Mouthwatering Dishes


  Do you love eating?  And feel very great when you taste something that can calm your growling tummy from a trip? If you are, here are the foods that are originally and uniquely made by our brothers and sister here in Luna.




Pokpoklo,is a traditional Ilokano seaweed delicacy that is abundant during summers. It is also popular throughout the Philippines.It is best served as an appetizer.Preparing it as a salad is simple. Just wash and rinse to get rid of any bit of dirt or sand clinging in the morsel-like weed. Then toss it with fresh tomato slices. No need to put salt as this is already salty in courtesy of ocean saltwater. It will be more tasty if you squeeze it with calamansi, or some vinegar.Pok-poklo are abundant in Nalvo, Luna, La Union that are being harvested by our brothers living near the area and sold by their wife or other members of the family at the Luna Public Market.

Bibingka ti Luna can be considered as the favorite among local and visiors here in Luna.Among the several producers of bibingka,Orang Nacionales can be considered as the grand master of all,with her 30 years experience baking bibingka. According to Nana Orang, she was influenced by Arciaga family of Brgy. Alcala also located at the same town. What was lacking in the traditional recipe was a sense of creaminess that Nana Orang added to her own version af baking bibingka.The production of bibingka was associated with the Nacionales family in Barangay Victoria and Santo Domingo Sur.










 Inkiwar or  Biko  is a Filipino dessert or  meryenda 
which is made of sweet or glutinous rice with plenty of coconut milk.Biko is a hit during occasions like fiesta, All Saint’s Day, Holy Week, Birthday lunch or Dinner party and the like.This glutinous rice cake, inkiwar , is famous among people in the Northern Luzon provinces and each ethnic culture has their own way of cooking inkiwar. Inkiwar is a dish that is very popular here in La Union particularly here in Luna.











 Suman(sinuman-ipos) is a food that is made up of glutinous rice that are wrapped in coconut or banana leaves and cooked using the steaming method unless somebody corrects me and tells me its native name.   Suman is actually the general termof the the numerous glutinous rice cooked this way.  And each region has several versionsof suman that also comes with its own regional or municipal name. Here in Luna "sinuman-ipos" is the name of the said delicacy.










 Kilawin is a kind of dish that is very popular here in Luna.
This dish is very unique because the fish used in this food is very small unlike other dishes that the fish used are big like tuna and etc. Those small fishes used in making kinilaw are freshly caught by our brother and sisters here in Luna by the process called "daklis" which are done in the sea of Rimos 1 to Rimos 5 located at the tail of the town.










Dried Armang is a kind of food that is made up of fish called armang that are caught by our brother and sisters in Luna and dried under the sun for one or two days. This dried armang are used and mix to another Ilocano dish called dinengdeng
to make it more tasty.











TUPIG is another unique food of Luna that are made or cooked by ourBibingka Master,Nana Orang. This unique food is made up of powderized glutinous rice or diket mixed with tagapulot , natural sugar from the sugar cane, spinkled with strips of coconut meat. Then it is wrapped in an banana leaf. To cook it, you need to put heat above and below the container that held the tupig.










 Bagoong nga Armang is one of Luna's food or sawsawan(sauce)
this is again made up of the fisharmang. This food is very fit with green mango (mangang hilaw) used as  sawsawan(sauce).

Merchandises in Luna 

 There are many products being made here in Luna. Crafted with patience, hardwork and skill, the merchandises are made to perfection.

 Pottery 


 One of the proudly made product of Luna are  pots . With a town rich with clay soil, the people had taken it for advantage in a good way by using the clay soil for pottery.



 Pebbles 

 We all know that the town of Luna is located near the coast. Because of this, the waves splashing into the shore made the pebbles along the seashore to be smooth. Another produce of Luna are the colorful stones at the coastline. Tourists and locals both pick precious stones because of the beauty of it.

 Every town has their own place that they  can be proud of . So now, here are the places in Luna that can take your breath away.

 Beaches

 Luna is a town addressed near the South China Sea. Because of this, Luna has many beaches. And you can see a sunset that is  so splendid. 








 Occalong Falls


Located deep in Cabalitocan is the famous waterfalls in Luna, the Occalong Falls. You need to walk for about 45 minutes to go there. It is a tiring walk but it is worth it because when you reach the falls you will see a view so magnificent and the water from the falls is as clear as a crystal. 







 Baluarte ti Luna 


 Baluarte ti Luna is a watch tower in Luna located at Barangay Victoria. It was built by the Spaniards to guard the town from pirates that abducts women and stole merchandises from the townspeople. 








 Ermita Church 


You can find the Ermita Church in the middle of the Luna Public Cemetery. It is an old church in which the walls are bone storages. Outside of the ruined church, it gives a creepy aura but inside it isn't scary. Written in the walls are the names and year of birth and death of the people with their bones in there. 







 Resurrection Museum 


 Resurrection Museum is a house in Barangay Alcala. It contains pictures and memorabilias about the history of Luna. If you want to know more about the History of Luna, You can visit this museum and be amazed of the old pictures. 






 USAFIP NL (Camp Spencer) 


 USAFIP NL Military Shrine and Park is the military base of the Americans at the time of the World War 2. In the blocks ,behind the monument, are the names of the soldiers who fought the war. 


 St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish


 St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish is the church in front of the Municipal Hall (Residencia) of Luna. It is visited by devotees because of the exceptional interior design. But not only because of the interior designs is this church being visited. In the Northern part of the church , in the right side is the so called  Miraculous Statue of Our Lady of Namacpacan . Many people had witness the miracle by the statue. Some said that the statue moved it's hand and smiled. And outside the church ,at the back of the statue, is a well with water that is said to be miraculous .
